Feathers Flies Home
Morning sun was gently breaking into the day. The pond lay in shadows under its tree. Three little friends waited, watching the sky … waiting for their friend “Feathers” to come home again, Suzy Squirrel with her bushy tail swishing … Floppy Froggie clean and green with feet thumping … and Miss Funny Bunny with nose twitching. Where was “Feathers” their Magic Wooden Duck? He should be home by now. High above the branches which swayed over the pond, they heard the flutter of wings. “Feathers” dipped and dived and circled high above them and again dipped his wings waving. He glided by and he was smiling. “You cannot imagine all the sights I’ve seen,” he shouted happily. “Imagine … Blue lakes with fish jumping clear of the water. I saw horses prancing in the fields and large lazy cows with sleepy brown eyes grazing in the grass. There were so many shades of green and so many different beautiful trees swaying in the breeze. Piglets with curly tails were playing and rolling in the mud. They were pink and then turned to brown. I saw a scarecrow waving his arms with the force of the wind. His job was to scare the Crows away from the corn fields. Crazy. ““
“I’ve travelled far and my wings are tired. I’m so sleepy.” My what a night I’ve had. It was wonderful to be free … to be … just me.” His wings flapped … flapped … flapped as he dropped … dropped from the sky. Looking back, he winked at his friend. “There is always tomorrow. The Magic will happen again” he whispered as he gently skidded into his pond, Safe … home again. Feathers eyes slowly closed and exhausted he slept.
The three little friends were smiling … excited by the promise of more Magic to come. They had never been farther from home … always within the sight of the giant tree and the Magic of their pond. One by one they too fell asleep to Dream … Dreams of places not seen and what was yet to come. Possibilities!
